GENERAL SUMMARY: Primary role is analyzing, designing, coding, testing, debugging, integrating, documenting and deploying GIS applications into testing and production environments using the Java development platform. This position will formulate and define system scope and objectives for assigned projects and follow the software development lifecycle methodology.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.Participates in the design and coding of software products.
2.Performs systems modeling, simulation, and analysis.
3.Prepares comprehensive test plans and conducts tests.
4.Provides test results and recommends moderately complex corrections to more experienced software engineers.
5.Advises hardware engineers on machine characteristics that affect software systems, such as storage capacity, processing speed, and input/output requirements.
6.Writes and updates technical documentation such as user manuals, system documentation, and training materials.
7.Troubleshoots problems and provides customer support for software operating system and application issues.
8.Maintains current knowledge of relevant technologies as assigned.


Requires BS/BA degree in a computer science discipline, or the equivalent combination of education, technical training or work experience.

Requires 4-8 years experience in the full life cycle of software development including managing, designing and deploying available, scalable, secure, distributed decision support and geographical information processing applications, using state-of-the-art methods and tools.


1. Experience in complex, large-scale or mid-tier ESRI-based GIS systems including customizing ArcGIS software
2. Experience using GIS software in a networked environment including a geodatabase.
3. Skills in collecting, analyzing, verifying, and manipulating research data.
4. Ability to write, edit, and/or revise a range of technical communications from specifically compiled raw data.
5. Skills in collecting, analyzing, verifying, and manipulating research data.
6. Experience applying J2EE design patterns to software development.
7. Experience developing web applications with Java, Avenue and C
8. Experience with deploying applications in a UNIX environment
9. Experience with ArcInfo, ArcGIS Desktop and ArcView
10. Knowledge of and experience with database query/retrieval languages (SQL) and relational database concepts.
11. Excellent communication and strong team building skills.
12. Ability to work closely with a diverse team including developers, database administrators, testers, technical writers, configuration managers and business users.
